10-Minute Walk

10/9/18 – Did you know that 92% of HP residents enjoy living within a 10-minute walk to a local park?  Everyone deserves a high-quality park.  But today, 1 in 3 Americans – more than 100 million people don’t have a park within a 10-minute walk from home.   This month marks the first anniversary of a nationwide effort to ensure everyone has easy access to a local park.  The Park District of Highland Park is proud to be a part of this effort with the City of Highland Park.

Studies show that high quality parks provide a wide range of benefits to people living in urban areas.  These include physical and mental health benefits, by providing opportunities to be physically active and to interact with nature; economic benefits by boosting business and property values and helping to revitalize neighborhoods; community-building benefits by providing opportunities for neighbors to interact with each other and work together to improve their surroundings; and environmental benefits by cleaning and cooling the air, improving climate resilience, and providing opportunities for environmental education.

In 2017, the Park District published an article in the fall brochure highlighting University of Washington, research scientist, Kathleen L Wolf, Ph.D. explaining “The Health Benefits of Small Parks and Green Spaces” along with a list of “Great Ways to Enjoy Your Parks!” right here in Highland Park.   To read the article, click here
