HIGHLAND PARK, Ill., September 15, 2006— Last spring the Park District of Highland Park asked the community to help create a vision for Highland Park’s lakefront. A summit was held May 23 & 24, 2006 to gather ideas and kick off planning for ecological restoration, recreational improvements, shoreline preservation and educational programs. “Highland Park is one of the few Illinois communities located on the Great Lakes. We’d like to strengthen our connection with Lake Michigan and take full advantage of this wonderful asset,” said Mayor Michael Belsky. From the summit and subsequent input, the Park District’s Lakefront Planning Commission gathered information and the community’s ideas for Highland Park’s public lakefront properties. With this as a starting point waterfront planners JJR, LLC, have developed several plans that envision a much more prominent role for the lakefront. A meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at the Highland Park Country Club, 1201 Park Avenue West, to share this information and listen to input about the plans. “This is a true community effort,” stated Park Board President Stacy Weiss, “the whole city will benefit from improvements to our lakefront. The purpose of this meeting is to create consensus and rally support for plans to capitalize on a resource that makes Highland Park such a special Illinois community.” For more information regarding this public meeting and lakefront developments visit the Park District’s website, www.pdhp.org. or call (847) 831-3810.
