Nature at Highmoor

Release Date: Apr. 5, 2007

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill., April 5, 2007— Highmoor Nature Preserve is a 10.5 acre Illinois Nature Preserve with dedicated trails for hiking and several distinct natural areas such as an oak savanna, wetlands and remnant prairie. The preserve was once slated to be a housing development. Sidewalks were installed, and then the Depression hit. At one point, one and one half acres of the preserve were farmed for agriculture, but the remaining 8.5 acres were left alone allowing for the native plants to survive. Today the sidewalks serve as good firebreaks for prescribed burns, as well as preferred sites for brush pile burns that reduce impact on the land.

On Saturday, April 7, Eagle Scout Robbie Salkenith will be planting ninebark, American plum and nannyberry scrubs, which are native to Highmoor from 9:00 a.m.-Noon. Over the years Salkenith’s family has played an instrumental role in preserving Highmoor. Highmoor Nature Preserve is located at 2255 Ridge Road, between Park Avenue and Half Day Road off Ridge Road. For more information about the Natural Areas program please contact Rebecca Grill at 847.681.2189.
