Highland Park Takes Second

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill., July 30, 2007— Highland Park Giants U11 Navy Team took second place in the North Shore Baseball League this past weekend. The North Shore Baseball League hosts this yearly tournament where 20 community teams come out and play.

The U11 Navy team won three straight games from Friday, July 26-Saturday, July 27, to make it into the championship game on Sunday, July 28.

On Friday, Navy came from behind to beat Zion Benton, 8-5. Game highlights: Kriendler hit the go ahead RBI single, Hochstadt hit a home run, and Markey pitched three strong innings. Centerfielder Flavin hooked up with Ciancio for an inning ending double play.

Navy came from behind (losing 8-4 in the fourth inning) to win on their Saturday game against Kenilworth/Winnetka, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-8 lead and hold for a 10-9 victory. To spark the comeback Lowenthal caught a fly ball in left field. With runners on first and third-no outs, Lowental threw to the plate. Ciancio (catcher) tagged the runner coming home and threw to third where Dzik tagged out the runner trying to advance, an inning ending triple play.

Once again, Navy came from behind in the second game on Saturday against Buffalo Grove. Navy (losing 8-4) scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Every player on the team posted a hit during this inning. Key hits were taken by Flavin, Ciancio, Markey, Hochstadt, Lowenthal, Kreindler, Gerzonovicz, Simone, Spungen, Deheal, Dzik. Flavin threw four shut-out innings to end the game. Navy won 13-8.

Highland Park U11 Navy made it into the championship on Sunday, losing to Skokie Indians, 17-6.

Two Highland Park U11 teams (Highland Park Navy and Highland Park Royal) made it to the final 4 of 20 teams in their division. Congrats to both teams on their excellent seasons!
