The Park District of Highland Park Invites Kids to the 3rd Annual 'Kids Bike & Run' Biathlon

Release Date: Jul. 18, 2008

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill., July 18, 2008 — On August 2 at 9:00 a.m., Sunset Woods Park, located at 1801 Sunset Rd. in Highland Park, IL, will be the site for the 3rd Annual Kids Bike & Run.

Only a scant few years ago, commuting by bike was on the verge of becoming a relic of the past. But today, with oil prices on the rise and the growing movement to pry inactive children away from computer and television screens, the bicycle is making a big comeback.

“This event provides a great opportunity for kids to get reacquainted with their bikes,” said Mike Schulewitz, Facility Manager at the Park District’s Recreation Center of Highland Park. “Not only is it a fun activity for family and friends, but cycling provides cardio and muscle-toning health benefits. And choosing to travel by bike rather than car is much easier on the environment.”

The Kids Bike & Run is open to children ages 5-12 and will feature four separate age divisions: ages 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12. The distance for children ages 5-8 will be .9 miles for biking and .3 miles for running. For children ages 9-10, the biking distance will be 1.8 miles and the running distance will be 0.6 miles. The entire event will take place on the track located at Sunset Woods Park. Those wishing to participate can register at any Park District of Highland Park facility. Registration is $5 per participant before August 2 and $10 for those registering on the day of the event. Pre-registered participants will receive a free T-shirt and all participants are eligible to receive an award. Check-in for the event begins at 8:00 a.m. In the case of rain, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday, August 3.

The Park District of Highland Park is hosting this event in cooperation with Healthy Highland Park, an organization that aims to foster wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle among Highland Park citizens. The event is also receiving support from the Healthcare Foundation of Highland Park, a community trust that awards grants to organizations promoting healthcare services and programs.
