Arbor Day Celebration
Release Date: Apr. 23, 2007
HIGHLAND PARK, Ill., April 23, 2007— Join the Park District of Highland Park as we celebrate Arbor Day, a national holiday that stems back to the 1800’s. The holiday originated when J. Sterling Morton moved from Detroit to Nebraska and quickly planted trees, scrubs and flowers around his home. Being a lover of nature Morton proposed a tree planting holiday named Arbor Day in 1872. In
1985 Arbor Day became a legal holiday in Nebraska. Arbor Day has spread throughout the United States. Each state has decided on a date that works best for planting trees. Illinois and the Park District of Highland Park will celebrate Arbor Day on April 27.
To keep up with the tradition of planting trees the Park District will plant a Swamp White Oak at Heller Nature Center, 2821 Ridge Road. Throughout the year the Park District continues the tradition of planting trees by planting over 25 trees at various parks. In addition to planting a tree, Larry King, the City Forester, will present information about caring for mature trees. Participants will also learn how to judge the age of a tree. The fun will not end there. Join us on a Scavenger Hunt of LARGE proportions-a tree identifying scavenger hunt.
