Give Back to Nature

Release Date: Apr. 6, 2007

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill., April 6, 2007— Preserving and protecting our natural areas is a full-time job with the 650 acres and 44 parks that the Park District of Highland Park manages. Volunteers are needed on a regular basis to help accomplish different tasks including cutting invasive brush such as buckthorn, collecting seeds of native plants and participating in prescribed burns in prairies and woodlands. These opportunities allow you to give back, appreciate and learn about the beautiful natural areas that we have in Highland Park.

On Saturday, April 21 from 10:00 a.m.-noon, Natural Areas Coordinator Rebecca Grill and volunteers will be working at Foley’s Pond, planting additional native shrubs and pulling garlic mustard, in order to improve habitat for migratory birds and those that nest at Foley’s during the summer. By planting native shrubs, such as Vernal Witchhazel, Spicebush, Serviceberry, Hazelnut, American Plum and Blachaw Viburnum we are providing homes for birds like the Green Heron, Kingfisher and Scarlet Tanager. The scrubs that have been planted and will continue to be planted were chosen with an eye for their suitability for bird shelter, nesting potential and food. The Park District received guidance from the Chicago Audubon Society, namely Judy Pollock, and contributions from neighbors and friends of Foley’s Pond. Foley’s Pond is located at 1268 McDaniels Avenue (McDaniels Avenue just south of Bob-O-Link Road).
