Laurel Park is the site of a contemporary sculpture, a historic log cabin and a memorial garden. The contemporary sculpture by Peter Voulkos, purchased in part with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, is only yards away from the Francis Stupey log cabin, Highland Park’s oldest standing structure. The cabin, which was built in 1847, was moved from its original site to Laurel Park and furnished with authentic period items.
Memorial Gardens has three sections, each honoring the horticultural achievements of a Highland Park resident. Its rose garden is a tribute to William Egan, who promoted the culture of roses; its wildflower and perennial garden is named for naturalist and former District 107 school superintendent Jesse Lowe Smith; and its natural garden with stonework honors Jens Jensen, one of the nation’s foremost landscape architects.
