13th Annual Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service

January 17

| Free

Join the Highland Park community for a special virtual multigenerational event. Proudly sponsored by the Park District of Highland Park and the Highland Park Human Relations Advisory Group.

A contribution to creating a healthy natural environment outside your own home, trickles down to environments beyond your neighborhood and city.  As Dr. King said it best “all life is interrelated.”

Pick any service project from winterizing your lawn for native birds, cutting back invasive species, spreading native seeds, or even making a phone call for environmental justice.

Winterize your yard for birds – Audubon society

Become a bird advocate by creating healthy habitats for migrating and stationary birds. The healthier we keep our environments the more diverse birds we will help on their migration routes back and forth.

Cut back invasive species

Invasive species like garlic mustard and buckthorn invade and replace native plants in an area causing the balance of an ecosystem to be thrown off.  Discover if you have any in your yard and how to clean them out.

Sow native seeds

Watch pollinators, birds and your yard thrive with native plants. Not only do native plants help to increase biodiversity but they play a crucial role in soil and water conservation.  Best part about native gardens, they are gorgeous! Click here to learn how to sow seeds in the snow.

Pick up litter in your neighborhood, local parks, or even other areas

Get some exercise on your hike and do some good too.  Picking up litter has positive impacts on your community, wildlife and even water ways.  Use the Litterati app to tag items you pickup, challenge others and inspire change.

Environmental Justice

Millions rely upon Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes for drinking water, recreation and more.  From plastic pollution, to invasive species, to storm water management all affect the water ways we rely upon.  Get involved in keeping the Great Lakes healthy and safe for all with the Alliance for the Great Lakes.

Pictures of you doing your service project or even the after math of what you accomplished can be sent to info@pdhp.org so that we can all celebrate the service you provided to the community and environment.
