Inclement Weather Policy

Rosewood Beach’s operating hours are subject to changing weather conditions (including cold weather, lightning and/or thunderstorms, or continuous rain), High Waves and Water Quality.

Public Communication

When the weather is cool or inclement, Park District staff use local apps, such as Weather.com, Weather Bug, and Weather Underground, to help determine changes to facility openings and closings.

  • Check the Park District App, under Conditions, to see the facility’s current Open/Closed Status.
  • Call the Recreation Center at 847.579.4554 for the facility’s current Open/Closed Status.
  • Call the Lake County Health Department at 847.377.8030 for water quality updates.

PDHP will not issue refunds or rain checks for inclement weather.

Cold Weather

No lifeguards on duty if fewer than 25 swimmers are present after 11am or if the temperature is 66 degrees or less.

The weather will be re-evaluated at 2pm to determine if swimming will be allowed at 3pm.

No lifeguards on duty for the remainder of the day if fewer than 25 swimmers are present any time after 4pm or if the temperature is 66 degrees or less.

Stormy Weather

For the safety of our guests and staff, we will temporarily close the facility for a minimum of 30 minutes when StrikeGuard (Lightning Detection System) sounds a Warning, when thunder is heard, or when lightning is spotted. A 30-minute timer will restart for every observed lightning or thunder after the initial observation. During this time all patrons must retreat to sheltered areas or their vehicles.

If the facility closes in the morning and poor weather conditions are persistent, the weather will be re-evaluated at 2pm to determine if the facility can reopen at 3pm. If poor weather conditions persist in the afternoon, the facility will close for the remainder of the day.

The facility will reopen as soon as StrikeGuard sounds an “all clear” or there has not been lightning or thunder observed for a minimum of 30 minutes.

High Waves

The swim area will be closed when the Chicagoland Weather Service issues a High Wave Warning or at the Park District Manager’s discretion.

Water Quality

The Lake County Department of Health tests the bacteria levels of swimming beaches daily. After reviewing the tests, the Department of Health recommends whether the beaches should open or close.

For the health and safety of our patrons, the Park District of Highland Park follows the recommendations of the Lake County Department of Health. For more information, call the Lake County Health Department at 847.377.8030.
