Join together with the community for the 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. This federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a perfect opportunity to pay tribute to Dr. King’s legacy through service. Hosted by the City of Highland Park’s Human Relations Advisory Group and the Park District of Highland Park.
Guests are also invited to participate in a wide variety of service projects facilitated by local organizations.
Schedule of events:
9-10:30am: Drive-Through Donation Event at the Recreation Center of Highland Park Parking Lot (see below)
10-10:30am: Presentations of the Colors by the Highland Park Police Department Color Guard, Pledge of Allegiance led by District 112 students, remarks by City of Highland Park Mayor Rotering and Park District of Highland Park Board President Grossberg, a keynote address on health equity by Brandon Buchanan, FACHE, System Assistant Vice President of Highland Park Hospital, and music by members of the Highland Park High School Music Ensemble.
10:30am-noon: Service Projects
Noon-12:15pm: Performance by Ravinia Festival’s Reach, Teach, Play
A Safe Place: paper towels, toilet paper, garbage bags, baby wipes, Diapers (all sizes), Pull ups (all sizes, Detergent pods, disinfectant spray, disinfectant wipes, liquid hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, liquid body soap, baby soap/shampoo, ziplocs (all sizes), aluminum foil, cleaning supplies, baby wipes, Women’s underwear- all sizes (particularly XL and above), and Children’s underwear- all sizes.
National Council of Jewish Women – North Shore: Items will be delivered to YWCA Shelter: new socks, small throws/blankets, flip-flops, shampoo, conditioner, tooth brushes, toothpaste, nail polish, emery boards, adult paperback activity books, journals, pens, deodorants, body lotions, hair brushes, combs, other personal grooming items
Highland Park Public Library: Items will be delivered to PADS Lake County: Multigrain Cheerios – 18 oz, Shelf-stable milk; Juice Packs (apple juice/fruit juice); Water bottles; Hot chocolate packs; Hormel Compleat Chicken and Dressing; Hormel Compleat Turkey or Manicotti; Hermel Compleat Meatloaf & Gravy; Campbell Chunky Soup; Fruit cups; Nuts; and Nature Valley Protein Bars
Working Bikes: used adult bikes, gently used kids bikes, parts, and accessories
District 112 Foundation: Items will be delivered to Lurie’s Children Hospital: New children’s books
Moraine Township Food Pantry: Unopened, unexpired food (shelf-stable items, produce, eggs, cheese, meat, bakery), pasta sauce and pasta, Baking items, Progresso Soup, Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, Cereal and oatmeal
The Balance Project: Support kits for homeless families – hand towels, hand sanitizer, bath-size soap (3 oz. bar or larger), travel shampoo & conditioner, adult toothbrush & toothpaste, small travel First Aid Kit, Antibacterial Wet Wipes, Pocket tissue pack (kleenex on-the-go), gallon size re-sealable bags
