Formerly known as Centennial Park, Danny Cunniff Park was renamed, remodeled and dedicated in 1999 after the Park District received the largest private donation ever from the family of Danny Cunniff. During Danny's brief but valiant battle with acute myeloid leukemia, which he ultimately succumbed to 37 days after his diagnosis, Tim and Jill Cunniff were deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support they received from the community of Highland Park.
Through the generosity of the Cunniff family, and a matching State grant, a renovation project was undertaken in 1999 to improve the parks two existing soccer fields and add two new fields to the complex. In 2002, the park was named the Sports Turf Managers Association Soccer Field of the Year. The park is also home to Centennial Ice Arena.
Don't have a good sled hill in your neighborhood? Well, hop on your sled and slide on over to the big hill at Danny Cunniff Park! This hill is located toward the back of the park, just south of Centennial Ice Arena. This is an unsupervised activity. Sledding is fee-free and open to the public. Call 847.579.3130.

In 1897 Foleys Pond was a brickyard owned by the Foley family, where they mined the area for clay to make bricks. About 20-30 feet down they hit an underground spring and the hole quickly filled with water creating a pond. The Park District bought the pond from Mr. Foley in 1925.
The pond was stocked with bass, perch and pickerel. During the 1930s and 1940s wild canaries roosted in the trees around Foleys Pond. The pond is tucked between the first and second hole at Sunset Valley Golf Course.
Features, Amenities and Activities
Foleys Pond is 4 1/2 acres with a large 2 1/4 acre pond surrounded on all sides by Mesic Closed Savanna. The pond offers a fishing pier with benches for enjoying the view or fishing. The pond serves as a good rest stop for migratory birds. It provides the birds with much needed shelter, water access, and a high protein diet of seeds and berries. Spring and fall are the best time to see migratory birds.
Foleys Pond serves as an important part in the Lake Michigan Flyway, which consists of the natural areas, located along the coast of Lake Michigan. Animals that have been seen at Foleys pond include: rabbits, mallards, wood ducks, various songbird species, kingfishers, red-headed woodpeckers, scarlet tanagers, orioles, carp, and catfish.
Some rare species that have been sighted migrating through the area are peregrine falcons, goshawks, yellow-headed blackbird, black-crowned night heron, brown creepers, and western tanager. |

Highmoor Nature Preserve, a 10.5 acre Illinois Nature Preserve, has dedicated trails for hiking, consisting of oak savanna, wetlands and remnant prairie. The preserve has a small gravel parking lot.
The Preserve was once slated to be a housing development. Sidewalks were installed, and then the Depression hit. One and one half acres of the preserve were farmed for agriculture at one point, but the remaining 8.5 acres were left alone allowing for the native plants to survive.
Today the sidewalks serve as good firebreaks for prescribed burns, as well as, preferred sites for brush pile burns that reduce impact on the land. The Natural Areas Program received a grant in 2002 from U.S. Fish and Wildlife to restore natural habitat for the endangered Prairie White Fringed Orchid at Highmoor Nature Preserve.
The Ecological restoration was conducted by The Care of Trees. Eagle Scout Kevin Kelley built the bluebird boxes at Highmoor Nature Preserve from donated materials in 2002. Eagle Scout Devin Withey built the bridges and boardwalks at Highmoor Nature Preserve from donated materials in 2000.
Features, Amenities and Activities
Wildlife include white-tailed deer, fox, coyotes, owls, songbirds and woodcocks. Other inhabitants include insects, Prairie Cray-fish and an assortment of butterflies. In fact, the butterfly monitors for Highmoor reported the highest count for the butterfly known as Spring Azures in 2002. |

Jens Jensen Park is named in honor of the famed landscape architect who had his studio two blocks from the park. Jensen is internationally recognized for helping create a distinct style of landscape architecture known as the Prairie Style. His designs drew heavily from the Midwestern landscape for inspiration and made extensive use of native plants and materials. Jensen's landscape designs can be seen in Chicago's Columbus, Garfield and Humboldt parks. He also landscaped estates belonging to prominent families including the Rosenwalds, Armours and Fords.
Jens Jensen Park is the only park in Highland Park designed by Jensen, a Ravinia resident and nationally known landscape architect. In it are Jensen’s trademarks: native shrubs and trees, natural materials and a stone council ring. The large boulder in the middle of the ring is a memorial to August (Mrs. Julius) Rosenwald, Jensen’s patron and friend. The park was restored and dedicated to Jensen in 1980. The informative kiosk was donated by the North Shore Garden Club and the perennial garden was donated by the Ravinia Garden Club. Both of these donations enhance the natural beauty of the park. The acre park also features a picnic area.

Laurel Park is the site of a contemporary sculpture, a historic log cabin and a memorial garden. The contemporary sculpture by Peter Voulkos, purchased in part with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, is only yards away from the Francis Stupey log cabin, Highland Parks oldest standing structure. The cabin, which was built in 1847, was moved from its original site to Laurel Park and furnished with authentic period items.
Memorial Gardens has three sections, each honoring the horticultural achievements of a Highland Park resident. Its rose garden is a tribute to William Egan, who promoted the culture of roses; its wildflower and perennial garden is named for naturalist and former District 107 school superintendent Jesse Lowe Smith; and its natural garden with stonework honors Jens Jensen, one of the nations foremost landscape architects.

May Theilgaard Watts was a well renowned naturalist and author from Highland Park. Her writings include The Winter Tree Finder and Ravinia Her Charms and Destiny. In 1980, three fifth graders from Ravinia School with their principal, Mrs. Falkoff, had the idea to rename the school’s wooded area.
They presented a petition to the Park District so the woods could be dedicated to May T. Watts. Ravinia School was instrumental in restoring The May T. Watts Park through stewardship programs and volunteering.
Features, Amenities and Activities The Park offers a nature trail for hiking. Wildlife includes raccoons, songbirds and grey squirrels. The park mainly serves as an educational tool for the students at Ravinia School. The May T. Watts Park consists of 2 acres of Mesic Closed Savanna. |

Millard Park was once part of the Schaffner estate with a home designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw in 1909. Henry Floriani originally designed the gardens. The Park District of Highland Park acquired the land in 1969 and the house was demolished in 1982. In 1987, the Junior League of Evanston-North Shore approached the Park District of Highland Park to restore the garden in Millard Park. In 1990, local members of the Garden Club of America took over the gardens maintenance.
The garden was dedicated to Robert C. Schaffner in May of 1991. Since 1991, the Park District of Highland Park has maintained the garden. Millard Park is named after Everett L. Millard who was an early Commissioner and President of the Highland Park East Park District. Voted Best Secluded Picnic Spot by Chicago Magazine, August 2001.

History In 1892, the Hotel Moraine first opened its door to guests on a 15-acre lake front site. The hotel consisted of three large Georgian style buildings containing 200 rooms. The grounds once sported a swimming pool, stone bridge crossing the ravine and beautiful gardens. The hotel closed in May of 1970.
A few remnants of the structures and the gardens can be found on the property. There were plans to build a 35-story apartment building on the site before the City of Highland Park bought the property and made it into a public park. The City deeded the property to the Park District in 1998.

In the winter of 1999, the Park District of Highland Park lost one of its most devoted fans. Seven-year-old Rory Deutsch was a thoughtful, sensitive and extremely bright child always active and always learning.
From Parent and Tot classes to T-Ball, Rory was always involved in a Park District activity. In honor of their son’s memory, Ross and Mindy Deutsch lovingly made a donation for a Tot-Lot in the Highland Park subdivision, Highland Lakes.
On November 21, 2001 with friends and family gathered, the Deutsch family and the Park District of Highland Park dedicated the land in honor of Rory Deutsch. In Rory, the Park District of Highland Park found a true believer and through his sweetness of spirit we will keep on believing.
Features, Amenities and Activities This small park, nestled in the Highland Lakes subdivision, contains a fenced tot lot and a gazebo overlooking a large pond. The park, constructed in 2001, was made possible through a donation from the Deutsch family in remembrance of their young son, Rory. |

Sunset Woods Park is 38 acres, eight of which are designated natural areas consisting of Mesic Closed Savanna and ephemeral wetlands. Wildlife includes red-tailed hawks, grey squirrels, bluebirds, various songbirds, skunk and opossum. The land that makes up Sunset Woods Park was purchased in several parcels from 1920 to 1949. Up until 1968 an Indian Trail tree stood at Sunset Woods Park. Native Americans used trees to mark trails used for traveling and commerce between various tribes.
White Oaks were used on this particular trail though Sunset Woods. Another trail nearby used American Elms as trail markers. Over 100 trees in Northern Illinois have been identified as Indian Trail Trees. At least 11 oak trees were identified in Highland Park and survived until 1905.
