Project Overview

Renovation of the Recreation Center of Highland Park is a Phase 1 project identified in
 the GreenPrint 2024 Master Plan.  The project includes relocation of the Group Exercise studio to the lower level, creation of  a new training studio for both personal and small group fitness training, reconfiguration the fitness desk and lobby area, and expansion of the fitness floor square footage.  The facility will remain open during construction with limited disruption to patrons.

The top priority identified in the Recreation Center of Highland Park annual fitness member survey for the past three years is the need for more space on the fitness floor as well as dedicated space for stretching.  You spoke and we listened.

This is Timeline description, you can change All group exercise classes have now been moved to the new lower level studio accommodating larger class sizes, a new variety of class options and expanded personal training opportunities.

This week, work on the Phase 2 –  upper level included removal of the temporary wall which wrapped around newly constructed offices. Overnight on June 26, demolition of the old group exercise studio was completed.

New state-of-the-art Group Exercise Studio opened for regular classes on Tuesday, June 27.  A special open house was held on Monday, June 26 for members to try out the new space. 

Phase 2 of the renovation also went into full swing on Tuesday. Upstairs demolition will take place at night throughout the week. Additional temporary walls will be erected to minimize disruption to members.

The lower level construction is progressing with:
– Installation of the structural steel for room partition

– Installation of the new window on the east wall

– Installation of drywall on the north and south walls, center partition and new storage closet

– Installation of new ceiling ventilation

Remaining work for Phase 1 includes installation of the new Queenax Fitness Equipment, new bamboo floor, acoustical ceiling tiles, lighting, sound system and painting.

– A temporary construction wall was built behind the fitness desk which wraps around the current offices, storage closet, member day lockers, trainer’s office and a portion of KidFit
– Temporary lockers and coat hooks have been placed adjacent to the fitness desk to accommodate members during renovation
– Overnight demolition of current walls and trash disposal was completed after business hours to avoid disturbance to members
– Drywall Framing is complete for new member retreat area, day lockers and offices
– Ongoing work including rerouting electrical and data lines

New rooftop HVAC units will be installed over the next few weeks which will significantly improve heating, cooling and ventilation of the fitness floor, spin and yoga studios and new group exercise studio.  The project team anticipates that the project will be completed approximately 1-2 weeks later than previously scheduled, but still within the advertised timeframe of Early Fall, 2017.

Only one month into our renovation project and construction crews are making significant progress on the new lower level Main Group Exercise Studio. 

On Monday, April 17 construction begins on the upper level!

How will this impact members?
Limited Lockers – are temporarily relocated by the upper level reception desk.  Additional lockers are available in the lower level locker room.

Temporary Walls – have been erected to minimize disruption to members during construction

Personal Training – office and stretching table are temporarily relocated to the lower level

The Recreation Center remains open during construction.  Once completed, the upper level will feature:
– Expansion of the fitness floor by 850 square feet
– A new dedicated stretching area
– Expanded free weight area
– A new 650 square foot personal training studio
– Enhanced Members Entrance and Retreat Area

 Construction began on Wednesday, March 8 on the new lower level Group Exercise Studio. Once completed, the new studio will be approximately 500 square feet larger that the current studio and will feature:

– A free floating bamboo floor with spring installation for maximum impact absorption
– State-of-the art Queenax equipment
– Improved lighting including brighter LED fixtures as well as additional windows providing more natural light and scenic views of the wetlands west of the Recreation Center 

The Recreation Center remains open during construction.

Design development, construction documents and the bidding process were completed on  schedule.  The Park Board approved staff to enter into a contractual agreement with Boller Construction for the project at the February 21 meeting.  The anticipated start date is early March 2017.
