In 2023, the Park District of Highland Park was awarded a $600,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to make improvements to the South portion of Sunset Woods Park. The proposed project is consistent with the approved Sunset Woods Park Master Plan and- addresses aging recreation components while prioritizing intergenerational play and access for all ages and abilities. The project scope includes a rain garden with native plantings, a new game area, the replacement and relocation of the basketball court to create a multi-use sports court, the replacement and relocation of the skate park, and the addition of a new wheel-friendly plaza that creates a space for all ages wheel activities.
Other upcoming investments in Sunset Woods Park:
- Planning for athletic field and court lighting replacement.
- Engineering assessment of the tennis and clay courts. This effort will determine future improvements and repairs to the courts.
- Engineering assessment of the drainage in the southwest corner of the park.
