Welcome to Kid Fit

If you have smaller children, we know that being able to count on quality and affordable childcare makes it so much easier to commit to a fitness regimen. That’s why we’re proud to offer professional childcare services for children ages 6 months to 10 years. This service is available to our members and guests.

Parents must remain on-site while their children are in the Kid Fit area. On your first visit, please plan to spend a few extra moments helping your child adjust to the Kid Fit area, and to fill out an information sheet about your child, including food allergies and any special information that will help us care for your child.

Because we want you to feel absolutely certain that your child is being well cared for during your time at the Recreation Center, we urge you to contact us at 847.579.4054 with questions or concerns.

Mom & Dad’s TIMEOUT
Your child can spend time with us while you run your errands! Moms and Dads can leave the Recreation Center and still enjoy the benefits of the Kid Fit Center. TIMEOUT hours are Monday-Friday 11am-2:30pm and Saturday-Sunday 10:30am-1pm. Time limits still apply. Reservations are required.

Annual Aquatic Memberships

The Recreation Center of Highland Park and Hidden Creek Aqua Park have come together to offer the ultimate swimming pass. Enjoy the Recreation Center indoor Aquatic Center and the seasonal outdoor use of Hidden Creek AquaPark all in one combined pass. Members receive free aquatic group exercise classes and discounts on Kid Fit childcare at the Recreation Center. Membership is valid one year from the date of purchase. Membership Descriptions

  • Month-to-Month: Available to individuals ages 11 and older and provides the same benefits as the individual Annual Membership, including Group Exercise classes. Month to Month membership, must be longer than 30 days.
  • Individual: This annual membership is for individuals 18 years of age and older.
  • Limited: Provides members over the age of 18 with daily, full membership privileges to the Recreation Center during the restricted hours of 10:30am-4pm.
  • Couple: This annual membership is for two adults, 18 years of age and older, who are sharing the same residence and living expenses; or a parent and their dependant child; or two dependent children living in the household. Children must be under the age of 18 and unmarried, or a full-time college student through age 23.
  • Family: This annual membership is for immediate family members living in the same residence and includes the father, mother, all children under the age of 18 and unmarried, full-time college students through age 23.
  • Student: This annual membership is available to anyone between the ages of 11 and 23 who are full time students. Student ID must be presented at the time of purchase for high school and college students. Students under the age of 18 must register with a parent.
  • Senior: This annual membership is for individuals 65 years of age and older.
  • Senior Couple: This annual membership is for couples, one of which is of 65 years of age or older, who are sharing the same residence and living expenses.
  • 30 day: Available to individuals 11 and older. Provides the same benefits as the individual Annual Membership and is valid for 30 days from the date of purchase. Cannot be modified or prorated

Membership Payment Features

  • Auto Charge: Pay by the month! When signing up for an annual membership, you may have your VISA, MasterCard or Discover card automatically charged on a monthly basis. A $5 per month service fee is charged in addition to your monthly membership dues.
  • Auto Renew: Setup your annual membership to renew automatically upon its expiration date. All annual memberships paid by credit card must setup their membership with Auto-Renew. Members still have the option to pay in full at the beginning of each membership term or use Auto Charge to pay on a monthly basis. (Please note, the $5 per month service charge for the Auto Charge feature still applies.) Annual memberships not setup with the Auto Renew feature must be paid in full at the time of registration by cash or check. Make the next time you renew your membership the last time you bother with paperwork; sign up for Auto Renew.

Important Membership Information

  • Proof of Residency: Proof of residency, family structure and school identification may be required. Documents that may be used to show proof of residency and family structure are a birth certificate, a valid Illinois driver’s license, an Illinois state-issued identification card or a current real estate tax bill with your name and Highland Park address.
  • Age Restrictions: Participants must be 13 years of age or older to access the fitness floor. Participants ages 11 and 12 must successfully complete the “Intro to Fitness Program” prior to accessing the fitness floor (additional fee required).

The Recreation Center houses 2 high-school-regulation-sized basketball courts. Come and shoot around with the family, or pick up a game with friends during any of our open gym times.

Members and nonmembers alike are welcome to participate in open gym. All participants must check in and receive a wristband prior to participating. The Recreation Center of Highland Park reserves the right to cancel and/or change open gym times without notice. A Recreation Center staff member has the right to revoke an individual’s open gym participation for misconduct.

To participate, a valid driver’s license and/or valid identification must be presented at the front desk and all players must sign in. You will then be given a wristband that you are required to wear during your participation.

No private training during open gym times unless authorized by the facility supervisor.

Julie is former Big Ten scholarship athlete who competed at the regional and national level in diving. She is a registered nurse and has a BSN & MSN in nursing. She is nationally certified in group exercise instruction by AFAA and holds certifications in ‘Tabata Boot camp’ and ‘Insanity’. She is working toward her NASM personal training certification. Julie teaches high intensity interval training classes and kettlebells. She is passionate about exercise and nutrition and believes interval training is the most effective way to fitness.

Milana Astorino

For over twenty years, Milana Astorino has taught at various fitness clubs, dance studios, and schools throughout the Chicago and North Shore area. She is an American Council on Exercise certified group exercise leader, and personal trainer. She holds a degree in Sports Management and Exercise Science. Currently, Milana teaches all formats of classes, and is training/coaching individuals of all types and ages. She works with dancers and athletes who want to improve their skill level, well-being and performance in their field.
Jessica Berger
Group Exercise Instructor
Yoga Instructor (200 RYT) Jessica's classes concentrate on linking the movement of the physical practice with the energy of the breath. She believes students benefit the most when the right balance between challenge/intensity and relaxation/release is achieved. Her goal is to give students an experience where they can be transported from the craziness of their daily lives into a grounded, calm space that allows them to deeply focus on their body and breath for the duration of the class. In keeping concentrated awareness of body alignment and breath control, her hope is for students to become more present and in tune with themselves, ultimately cultivating a lasting state of mindfulness and peace.

She is currently the top cycle and yoga instructor at Life Time Athletic- Vernon Hills, and is excited to share her passion for yoga with our members. Sue Carey Dean is an ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) certified personal trainer, as well as an indoor cycling and boot camp instructor. Sue Carey enjoyed jazz, ballet, twirling, gymnastics as well as team sports. After having children, Sue Carey found a passion in long distance running, swimming and cycling. Sue Carey has competed in over 25 half marathons and over 10 triathlons. Two of her greatest fitness accomplishments are completing a full marathon (taking 1st place in her age division) and a Half Ironman in Augusta, Ga. Sue Carey's passion for teaching and educating others started years ago when she was teaching elementary school. She believes that being physically active will keep a person feeling young, happy, fulfilled, and motivated. She enjoys watching people's energy grow while working out as well as being happy and active. "A fit life is a happy life".

- I was born and raised in Texas. In 1968 I left the Univ. of Texas at Austin to go work for Eastern Airlines. I arrived in Chicago January of 1969 and meant to transfer a.s.a.p., but here I am, still, 46 years later. I started studying yoga and practicing three days a week for years until I took instructor training and was certified in August of 1978. My main instructor and the person who oversaw my certification was Ramona Churvis who was taught by Swami Vishnu Devananda, a student of Sivananda. I am proud of the respected lineage of the master instructors I had. I have been to many other excellent instructor classes and workshops and I have learned something from every one of them. I consider myself not only a teacher, but a student as well. The style of “my yoga” I would say is traditional. It is adaptable for individuals, safe and along with stretching, toning and strengthening, relaxation is a very important component. I am currently teaching gentler classes like “Yoga with a Chair”. It might surprise many to know how effective and adaptable this can be. Great for anyone, but especially one who is older, ready to get in shape or recovering from illness or injury.
Laura Feldman

I first began practicing yoga in 2001 and immediately felt a connection to the poses, the structure of the classes, and the people practicing alongside me. As my journey progressed, I began appreciating the mindfulness and focus of the yoga practice, and the benefits that calmed mind, body and soul. I earned my 200 hour yoga teaching certification in 2011 through Pure Yoga and have been teaching at the Recreation Center of Highland Park since 2012. My classes are a sequence of flowing yoga poses that link movement to breath. The emphasis is placed both on proper alignment to enhance strength, flexibility, balance, and deeper poses to quiet the mind and allow one to leave class feeling renewed. I always believe grace and humor are part of the package. As I enjoy the never ending yoga journey, I continue to be inspired by my teachers and my students, our evolving practices and the integration of the yoga mindset with life off of our mats.
Judy Friedman
Personal Trainer
Judy Friedman- comes to personal training with a lifelong passion for fitness, nutrition, and wellness. She is certified as a Personal Trainer and Group Strength Instructor with particular focus on active senior (age 60+) populations. Proper form, mechanics and execution are priorities in Judy's training methods, combined with a sensitive approach to motivating people. Judy keeps current with constantly evolving fitness research, integrating balance, agility and functional moves into traditional cardio/resistance training programs. Her specialty training includes Midlife Fitness for Women, Advanced Functional Training, and Mechanics of Injury Prevention, Longevity Training for seniors, and Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics Fundamentals.
Katie Froelich

After 15 years as a school teacher, I have chosen to join my love of teaching with my love of yoga. As a teacher, I understand that we all have our own style and pace of learning which navigates us through life. I know how important it is to be open enough to truly see each student as they are. I aspire to help my students realize all they are capable of; mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. While yoga keeps me in excellent physical health, it is not only an exercise for me, it grounds me. I found yoga at a very difficult time in my life, and discovered a community that I loved and welcomed me. I intend to cultivate a safe space, in which each of my students sense a feeling of belonging as they courageously challenge themselves in their yoga journey.

Lisa Hoffman

Lisa’s passion for indoor cycling began in 1995. After taking her first class at Chicago’s East Bank Club, she was hooked! She incorporated it into her daily exercise routine, alternating it with running and yoga. As a lifelong runner, Lisa loves that indoor cycling gives her that same endorphin rush and intense cardio workout as running, without the excessive stress on the body. She has always been interested in fitness, running track, playing softball, biking, participating in her college’s running club, and playing ice hockey with her sorority. As her love of indoor cycling grew, so did her to desire to pass that on to others, she became a certified Madd Dogg Spinning® instructor in February of 2012. Lisa loves teaching and especially enjoys making playlists. She is motivated by inspiring people to reach their fitness goals. Aside from teaching indoor cycling classes and working as a Paralegal, Lisa enjoys spending her spare time with her ever growing family and friends. Lisa is excited to be a part of Joyride’s team!

I believe personal trainers can help clients achieve health, fitness, functional and athletic goals. In addition, the client will be provided with motivation and encouragement to help them stay focused, develop a safe and effective exercise program dedicated to their personal needs and help accomplish their fitness goals.

Karen is an ACE certified personal trainer. In addition to her personal training certification she also holds certifications in SMRT-Core, TRX Group Suspension Training Level 1, TRX Force Trainer Level 2, Barre Basics and R.I.P.P.E.D training as well as being CPR/AED certified. Karen also specializes in TRX group fitness classes’ youth through adult. Karen’s love of fitness goes back to early childhood when she was a gymnast and learned the importance of training, nutrition, endurance and commitment. Continuing her love of fitness and nutrition into adulthood Karen’s interest in nutrition motivated her to successfully complete a Professional Culinary Program. Karen enjoys working with people of all ages. Her goal is to have clients reach their goal and to continually inspire them on their path to success.

She has been teaching Zumba® classes for over five years and loves every minute of it. The reason is simple: Every class feels like a party! You don’t even have to know how to dance. Ann has practiced yoga for years, and received her 200RYT from Forever Om. She enjoys teaching vinyasa, power vinyasa and kids’ yoga. Presently, she is on staff at Lake Bluff Park District and Lake Forest Fitness Center. Ann and her husband have two young children and reside in Lake Forest.
Danielle Knighton

Danielle has been teaching a variety of cardio/strength formats, and has worked at various clubs in Lake Forest and Libertyville. Her favorite classes include Piloxing, Strength and Kickboxing. Currently, she is the Group Ex Coordinator at Lake Forest Fitness Center. Danielle and her husband are the proud parents of 3 boys and a little ‘diva”, and live in Lake Forest.
Ruben Markosyan

Ruben is an NASM Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Massage Therapist at European Healing and Massage Therapy School in Chicago, Illinois (focused on Swedish full body, deep tissue, stress and tension relieve and massage for common injuries.) He also specialized in teaching Circuit Training and Ultimate Barbell Classes. Yael is a 30 year veteran in the fitness industry. Born in Israel, Yael has cultivated her love of dance and movement, on 4 continents. Classically trained in ballet she received her BFA in dance therapy from York University in Toronto. Yael has taught children and adults the joy of movement from: hip hop, step, and aqua aerobics to funky fitness, now focusing on spin for the last 7 years in the United States. Yael brings international flair to all her classes – high octane world beat music pulses behind her energetic encouragement for every student. Multilingual, she hasn’t met a person she can’t make laugh. Dana has lead an active lifestyle since childhood. She was a competitive gymnast, a dance and psychology major at University of Michigan, and a working professional dancer before she became a certified instructor in 1999. Moving her body has always been a priority for Dana and inspiring others to do the same has become her passion. In 2012 she launched Everybody Fitness (www.every-body-fitness.com), a brand emphasizing exercise options and advice for every body and everybody. She currently sells 3 DVDs of her signature workouts and is always looking for and developing new ways to challenge herself and others in her classes. Exercise is a journey they go on together in her classes and she aims to motivate for years to come!

She is also certified by Bender Barre and WERQ among others. Debbie attended Northwestern University and the University of Pretoria, South Africa with a diploma in Gym Management. Julie is former Big Ten scholarship athlete who competed at the regional and national level in diving. She is a registered nurse and has a BSN & MSN in nursing. She is nationally certified in group exercise instruction by AFAA and holds certifications in ‘Tabata Boot camp’ and ‘Insanity’. She is working toward her NASM personal training certification. Julie teaches high intensity interval training classes and kettlebells. She is passionate about exercise and nutrition and believes interval training is the most effective way to fitness.

She is an American Council on Exercise certified group exercise leader, and personal trainer. She holds a degree in Sports Management and Exercise Science. Currently, Milana teaches all formats of classes, and is training/coaching individuals of all types and ages. She works with dancers and athletes who want to improve their skill level, well-being and performance in their field.

Yoga Instructor (200 RYT) Jessica's classes concentrate on linking the movement of the physical practice with the energy of the breath. She believes students benefit the most when the right balance between challenge/intensity and relaxation/release is achieved. Her goal is to give students an experience where they can be transported from the craziness of their daily lives into a grounded, calm space that allows them to deeply focus on their body and breath for the duration of the class. In keeping concentrated awareness of body alignment and breath control, her hope is for students to become more present and in tune with themselves, ultimately cultivating a lasting state of mindfulness and peace.

Sue Carey enjoyed jazz, ballet, twirling, gymnastics as well as team sports. After having children, Sue Carey found a passion in long distance running, swimming and cycling. Sue Carey has competed in over 25 half marathons and over 10 triathlons. Two of her greatest fitness accomplishments are completing a full marathon (taking 1st place in her age division) and a Half Ironman in Augusta, Ga. Sue Carey's passion for teaching and educating others started years ago when she was teaching elementary school. She believes that being physically active will keep a person feeling young, happy, fulfilled, and motivated. She enjoys watching people's energy grow while working out as well as being happy and active. "A fit life is a happy life".

- I was born and raised in Texas. In 1968 I left the Univ. of Texas at Austin to go work for Eastern Airlines. I arrived in Chicago January of 1969 and meant to transfer a.s.a.p., but here I am, still, 46 years later. I started studying yoga and practicing three days a week for years until I took instructor training and was certified in August of 1978. My main instructor and the person who oversaw my certification was Ramona Churvis who was taught by Swami Vishnu Devananda, a student of Sivananda. I am proud of the respected lineage of the master instructors I had. I have been to many other excellent instructor classes and workshops and I have learned something from every one of them. I consider myself not only a teacher, but a student as well. The style of “my yoga” I would say is traditional. It is adaptable for individuals, safe and along with stretching, toning and strengthening, relaxation is a very important component. I am currently teaching gentler classes like “Yoga with a Chair”. It might surprise many to know how effective and adaptable this can be. Great for anyone, but especially one who is older, ready to get in shape or recovering from illness or injury.

I first began practicing yoga in 2001 and immediately felt a connection to the poses, the structure of the classes, and the people practicing alongside me. As my journey progressed, I began appreciating the mindfulness and focus of the yoga practice, and the benefits that calmed mind, body and soul. I earned my 200 hour yoga teaching certification in 2011 through Pure Yoga and have been teaching at the Recreation Center of Highland Park since 2012. My classes are a sequence of flowing yoga poses that link movement to breath. The emphasis is placed both on proper alignment to enhance strength, flexibility, balance, and deeper poses to quiet the mind and allow one to leave class feeling renewed. I always believe grace and humor are part of the package. As I enjoy the never ending yoga journey, I continue to be inspired by my teachers and my students, our evolving practices and the integration of the yoga mindset with life off of our mats.

Judy Friedman- comes to personal training with a lifelong passion for fitness, nutrition, and wellness. She is certified as a Personal Trainer and Group Strength Instructor with particular focus on active senior (age 60+) populations. Proper form, mechanics and execution are priorities in Judy's training methods, combined with a sensitive approach to motivating people. Judy keeps current with constantly evolving fitness research, integrating balance, agility and functional moves into traditional cardio/resistance training programs. Her specialty training includes Midlife Fitness for Women, Advanced Functional Training, and Mechanics of Injury Prevention, Longevity Training for seniors, and Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics Fundamentals.

While yoga keeps me in excellent physical health, it is not only an exercise for me, it grounds me. Lisa’s passion for indoor cycling began in 1995. After taking her first class at Chicago’s East Bank Club, she was hooked! She incorporated it into her daily exercise routine, alternating it with running and yoga. As a lifelong runner, Lisa loves that indoor cycling gives her that same endorphin rush and intense cardio workout as running, without the excessive stress on the body. She has always been interested in fitness, running track, playing softball, biking, participating in her college’s running club, and playing ice hockey with her sorority. As her love of indoor cycling grew, so did her to desire to pass that on to others, she became a certified Madd Dogg Spinning® instructor in February of 2012. Lisa loves teaching and especially enjoys making playlists. She is motivated by inspiring people to reach their fitness goals. Aside from teaching indoor cycling classes and working as a Paralegal, Lisa enjoys spending her spare time with her ever growing family and friends. Lisa is excited to be a part of Joyride’s team!

The indoor pool offers a variety of drop in times for open swim, family swim, learn to swim and more. Plus, there is always at least one lane open for lap swimming. If you want to know specifically what is happening at the pool so you can plan your swim, check out our weekly schedule of programming. Learn-to-Swim
Splash around in the Recreation Center Learn-to-Swim program! The Recreation Center provides swim lessons for all ages and levels.

Early Childhood (Ages 3-Grade K)
Based on the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum, these classes incorporate songs, games and fun to ease students into the aquatic environment.

Youth Learn-to-Swim (Ages 6-15)
Based on the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum, the classes include skill progression in all fundamental aquatic motor skills.

Private Lessons
Often, the most effective way to learn to swim is by enlisting the help of a private instructor. The Recreation Center of Highland Park offers private and semi-private swimming lessons for participants of all ages. Based on the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum, swimmers will receive personalized instruction based on their needs and current swim abilities. For safety purposes, all spectators must observe classes from the observation room. To sign up for private swim lessons, complete the Private Lesson Request Form and submit it to Katie Lazzara at klazzara@pdhp.org.

Make-Up Policy
The Park District does not guarantee a participant’s ability to make up a class that is missed. All make-ups must follow these guidelines.

  1. Limit of 2 make-ups per session
  2. Make-Up Request Form must be complete prior to arriving to class. Forms can be picked up at the pool desk or the earlier link and then turned in to the Recreation Supervisor, Katie Lazzara’s mailbox at the pool or submitted via email to klazzara@pdhp.org.
  3. Participants can only make-up at their same level.
  4. If a participants shows up to a class that is full, the class will not be overloaded to accommodate a make-up.
  5. Reserving a make-up slot and then not showing up will count as the make-up lesson.
  6. Call Katie Lazzara at 847-579-4051 with day of lesson requests and questions.

Hold your next birthday party or business function in the beautiful spaces of the Recreation Center of Highland Park! The pool, gymnasium, studios (dance and spin) and multi-purpose rooms are all available for rental.

Let us open our doors just for you! The pool, gymnasium, studios and multi-purpose rooms may be rented after business hours. Our facility is perfect for large social events like bar/bat mitzvahs, family reunions, charity events and company outings. Prices vary accordingly. Please contact us for more information.

Party Attendants
Additional staff may be provided by the Recreation Center of Highland Park for any function held within our facility. If interested, ask for more information when booking. If you wish to provide you own attendant, you must receive approval from the Recreation Center of Highland Park prior to the date of your event.

Includes a 1-hour Zumba or Fitness class followed by 45 minutes in a party room. Instructor included.
