Natural Areas Intern

Under the direction and supervision of the Natural Areas Manager, the Natural Areas Intern performs entry-level professional duties of moderate difficulty providing the opportunity for professional training. Performs assigned duties to acquire knowledge of methods, procedures and standards required for successful performance. May perform duties such as gathering and organizing data to provide information for departmental special projects or reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists Natural Areas staff with invasive species control, including weeding of garden areas.
  • Performs ecological monitoring, including water quality, bird and floristic studies.
  • Collects GPS data and prepares reports and maps for project purposes.
  • Uses tools, such as hand loppers, saws and brush cutters, to conduct clearing. Including routine horticultural practices such as pruning and trimming trees and shrubs.
  • Represents the Park District with volunteers, staff and other agencies.
  • Prepares reports, spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Performs accurate data entry and some analysis under the guidance of Natural Areas staff.
  • Under the supervision of Natural Areas staff, may coordinate work of volunteers to complete restoration tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Salary Range: $16.50 – $16.50 Hourly

Location: Heller Nature Center – Highland Park, IL

Status: Seasonal
